WEDNESDAY OPEN THREAD

A body like the cartoon character “Cathy” might be key to a woman’s economic success, an anthropologist now says and just what the doctor ordered. The hourglass figure for females may be the thing in Pop Culture, a tiny waist, big boobs and curvy hips may not be all that, says Elizabeth Cashdan of the University of Utah. Cashdan says the hormones that make women physically stronger, more competitive and better able to deal with stress also tend to redistribute fat from the hips to the waist. More of Cashdan’s hypothesis may be found in the December issue of the journal “Current Anthropology.”
